Kristine J. Guleserian, MD, Director of the Congenital Heart Surgery Program and Co-Director of Congenital Heart Center at Medical City Children’s Hospital, is the first woman to lead a Congenital Heart Program in the United States. She earned her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine after graduating from Harvard College with a degree in the Classics. She completed her general surgery residency at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University School of Medicine followed by her thoracic surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine. She returned to Boston where she completed advanced fellowships in congenital heart surgery, cardiovascular tissue engineering and cardiac morphology at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. She holds board certifications in general surgery, thoracic surgery and congenital heart surgery. With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Guleserian cares for neonates, infants, children, adolescents and adults with congenital heart defects.
Dr. Guleserian holds leadership roles within the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and Congenital Heart Surgeons Society (CHSS). She served as Chair of the STS Workforce on Congenital Heart Surgery from 2019-2022. Dr. Guleserian is a founding member of the World Society of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and serves as a member of numerous national and international professional societies and committees including: International Society for the Nomenclature of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and Women in Thoracic Surgery.
Among numerous awards and accomplishments, Dr. Guleserian has been named a Top Doctor by U.S. News & World Report, D CEO Excellence in Healthcare Awards: Practitioner of the Year, and named Best Pediatric Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery by D Magazine for 9 consecutive years. Her book entitled “Surgeon’s Story” was published in 2017.
